Grain Spawn

Mushroom spawn sterilized in a mushroom bag like bird food.

Sterilized mushroom grain spawn is the cereal crop of rye berries, wheat berries, or millet. Injection ports support the clean spore transfer by insertion with a needle. Colonization occurs within weeks. A bulk substrate is the next step once the fully formed mycelium takes over the entire bag with no spaces.

Shiitake spawn in a common mushroom bag.

Shiitake grain spawn is a beginner’s way to grow your own rich-taste mushrooms at home. The fully or partially colonized bags of cereal crops are ready to be taken to hardwood substrate. L. edodes grows in nature on decomposing hardwood trees. In the lab, sterilized supplemented hardwood is used.

Lion’s Mane spawn is a commercial version of sawdust log production. The process uses bags instead of logs for greater yields. White Pom-Pom mushrooms form in large, dense clusters from transferring this colonized mycelium into a supplemented substrate like rice bran and hardwood.

Oyster Mushroom spawn is an easy way to cultivate your own edible fungi at home. With large meaty caps and dense, textured tastes, this mushroom gains a top spot in commercial mushroom growing. Add the colonized mushroom spawn mycelium to a substrate and see results in weeks.

Grain Spawn: Answered Questions

What’s the difference between mushroom spawn and substrate?

To make it simple, the process follows these steps. First, a spore print taken from a mushroom. Second, the spores go to agar. Third, that goes to mushroom spawn, and lastly, the fully colonized spawn added to the substrate. Mushrooms form in the substrate, and the process repeats itself.

How many CC’s of liquid culture do I inject into the sterilized spawn?

2cc of liquid culture injected into the sterilized mother spawn. Remember, the grain cannot be directly injected with spores unless the print was 100% sterile-made. A 1 cm X 1 cm punch of a colonized agar is another way to take the mycelium to grain. But agar to grain is not for those without a HEPA.

Is it possible to use two different types of spores inside the grain bag?

The yields will be minimal. Different types of mushrooms compete for resources. The complete dominance of sterilized spawn by one strain of fungi, required for any good harvest. Those cultivating multiple strains inside one grow will find that the dominant strain grows while the weaker type does not.

What are the ingredients of the mushroom spawn and any nutrient additives?

Gypsum is the main additive to mushroom spawn in a percentage of 2-5%. Add calcium carbonate for better water retention. It even improves the composition with its ability to balance the PH of the crop to neutral levels required of mushroom cultivation. Add 1 to 3 percent molasses for vigorous growth.
